Building Smart Environments in the Cloud

Dr. Hui-huang Hsu, Professor, Tamkang University, Taiwan ---

Hui-huang Hsu is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at Tamkang University, Tamsui, New Taipei City, Taiwan. He joined the faculty of Computer Science and Information Engineering at Tamkang University in August 2003. Before that he worked as Associate Professor in other universities in Taipei for eight years. Prof. Hsu received both his Ph.D. and M.S. Degrees from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida, USA. He got his B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from Tamkang University. Prof. Hsu has been very active in international academic activities, as conference organizer, journal editor/reviewer and invited speaker. He enjoys meeting scholars from different countries. His current research interests are in the areas of machine learning, data mining, ambient intelligence, bio-medical informatics, and multimedia processing. Prof. Hsu is a senior member of the IEEE.

Abstract of Dr. Hsu's Invited Talk

To automatically provide human-centric services, it is desired to build smart environments for such a purpose. The background system needs to first detect and collect needed information in the environment via sensors like video cameras, RFIDs, infrared sensors, motion sensors, pressure sensors, and ... etc. The information is then processed for understanding the context and intention of the people in the environment. Finally services are provided in a timely manner. Embedding computing and Internet of Things are two key technologies to implement such smart environments. Nevertheless, to provide more sophisticated services to human, processing of large amount of sensor data is required. Thus storage and processing of sensor data in the cloud seems natural. In this talk, we will first review the concept and development of ubiquitous computing and ambient intelligence. We will then introduce a few important projects for building smart environments. Finally, we will discuss the paradigm shift to the cloud.
